Q: What is Supporting the Spirit (SSF)?
Supporting the Spirit is a design resource for the nonprofit community. This 501 (c)3
foundation provides pro bono design services and donated materials to selected nonprofit
organizations to enhance their environments, and thus, their abilities to deliver much needed
programs and services to communities they serve.
Q: Why do Chicago communities need an organization like SSF?
Many foundations support our communities' critical nonprofit agencies, but few foundations
dedicate support for nonprofits to develop adequate facilities. Programs typically are funded,
but spaces in which these programs operate are not. For example, a funded daycare center might
be painted a drab gray color, or have loose ceiling tiles or no carpeting.
Q: How does SSF work?
SSF is governed by a voluntary board of directors and managed by a professional staff. In
cooperation with the Illinois Facilities Fund (IFF), Supporting the Spirit locates nonprofits in
need of our services.
Q: Where does SSF get its project leaders and materials?
An extensive database is being created to house names of design professionals, manufacturers,
distributors and service providers interested in supporting the Foundation's work. SSF will also
inventory "recycled" goods from a select list of participating suppliers so that staff can more
quickly match available goods with our nonprofit partners' needs.
Q: How can I help?
There are a multitude of ways to help. The fastest and easiest way is to make a financial
contribution. Introducing us to funding sources, such as corporate contribution departments,
would also be appreciated. Lastly, a gift of an item with appreciated value would be a wonderful
and generous way to show your support.
